The answer to this question may shock you.
2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans says that the average person should consume less than 2,300mg and people over 50 years of age should consume less than 1,500mg. This is equal to about 1 tsp of table salt. These are per day figures. The fact is most many people consume twice this amount easily and don't even realize it.
The problem with consuming too much sodium is that it is hard on the heart. You may over time develop kidney problems or heart disease. You should always consult a health professional to see how much sodium is right for you. Everyone is different and some people are more sensitive to sodium than others.

Replacing The Food Pyramid - MyPlate
We all remember learning about how to eat properly and how a healthy diet can be very important. During those lessons the Food Pyramid is what we looked at to show us the basic food groups. There are many critics of the food pyramid and MyPyramid. They say these images don't properly show the food groups and make it confusing. In response to this, the USDA as rolled out a new image of healthy eating. MyPlate is easier to understand and is based off the USDA Dietary Guidelines. My Plate offers ideas and suggestions including making half your plate vegetables and fruits. Combine exercise into your everyday activities. These activities/exercises should be fun. Do something active as a family.
There are tons of foods that are healthy that you can use to fill these food groups.
Here is a full list of foods for MyPlate
I invite you to explore this new program and see if you can include at least some of these healthy ideas into your everyday meals and activities.

The South Beach Diet
Could The South Beach Diet Be Your Weight Loss Answer?
More about the South Beach Diet Phases
One of the more popular diets today is the South Beach Diet. While it isn't on the best or healthiest diets list, it seems to be a generally healthy diet choice. Some disagree, but I invite you to look at the list of foods. The diet offers something from most of the major foods groups. The only real important items that are missing seem to be fruits from Phase 1. However many of these fruits are reintroduced during phase 2.
The South Beach Diet allows for foods with a low glycemic index. If you are looking for a diet where you won't starve, this could be your answer. In fact snacking is encouraged with the South Beach Diet. Sugar rich foods like potatoes, corn, rice and most sugary desserts are not allowed.
The idea behind the South Beach Diet is to create a new way of eating that will not only help us eat less, but make us not want to over eat in the future. For more information about the South Beach Diet see links below.
