2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans says that the average person should consume less than 2,300mg and people over 50 years of age should consume less than 1,500mg. This is equal to about 1 tsp of table salt. These are per day figures. The fact is most many people consume twice this amount easily and don't even realize it.
The problem with consuming too much sodium is that it is hard on the heart. You may over time develop kidney problems or heart disease. You should always consult a health professional to see how much sodium is right for you. Everyone is different and some people are more sensitive to sodium than others.
